Bruce Bonafede is a 20-plus year veteran of the strategic communications field with extensive experience in the complete range of communications disciplines. His career experience includes positions as a corporate spokesperson, publicist, crisis manager, news and feature writer, advertising copywriter, and as editor-in-chief of a weekly business newspaper.
Mr. Bonafede began his career in public relations with a crisis slant when he took on the task of spokesperson and issues manager for a highly controversial auto raceway project in the Palm Springs area in 1987. The project eventually died from a failure to maintain financing, but after initial opposition enjoyed widespread community and city government support due to effective communications.
Following his agency career, Mr. Bonafede served for almost 15 years as director of public relations for the Southern California division of Del Webb Corp., and then Pulte Homes, Inc. now the nation’s largest homebuilder. During his tenure the company faced a number of crises that threatened its operations. All these crises passed quickly and without meaningful impact due to effective media relations and messaging.
Upon leaving Pulte Homes, Mr. Bonafede founded Bonafede Communications in 2003. The company has worked with national and regional media outlets ever since to defend or promote its clients’ interests. It has provided services to a wide range of clients in industries as diverse as construction, banking, healthcare, land-use, publishing, restaurant, retail, real estate development, as well as non-profit organizations.
Mr. Bonafede is especially proud of pro bono work done by the company in 2008 for a non-profit rescue mission in another state faced with embezzlement by a finance director. The situation was made more threatening by the fact that the mission was about to launch a capital campaign raise funds to build new facilities. Through successful crisis management, the mission’s reputation was protected, and the organization is well on its way to raising the funds it needs to help hundreds of homeless people.
